The Parable of the Sower LIVE at Foyles

Backlisted Live is back and we are delighted to return to our event series at Foyles Charing Cross Road.

In this episode, John and Andy talk to the screenwriter and academic Una McCormack and poet Salena Godden about Octavia E. Butler’s strikingly prescient novel, The Parable of the Sower.

The live event will begin at 6.30pm with the discussion of Butler’s The Parable of the Sower which will be recorded for future broadcast. Following a short break, there will be a recording of a bonus episode of Locklisted, the podcast available exclusively to supporters of the show’s Patreon – which will give the audience the chance to ask the panellists questions about this month’s book, Octavia Butler or the Backlisted podcast!

Endless Night LIVE at Foyles

The much-loved Backlisted podcast returns to Foyles Charing Cross Road for the third instalment in a very special live series of the show. John and Andy are joined this July by guest speakers Andrew Male and Caroline Crampton for a look back on Agatha Christie’s masterful Endless Night.

Caroline Crampton is a writer and a podcaster. She has published two books, The Way to the Sea (2019) and A Body Made of Glass (2024). She is the creator and host of the award-winning detective fiction podcast Shedunnit. Caroline also curates articles as editor-in-chief of The Browser, and she writes reviews and essays for publications including Time, Literary Hub and the Guardian.

Andrew Male is the senior associate editor of Mojo magazine. He also writes about film, radio and TV for Sight and Sound and Sunday Times Culture, among others.

The live event will begin at 6.30pm with Andy, John and their guests hosting their discussion of Christie’s Endless Night which will be recorded for future broadcast. Following a short break, there will be a recording of a bonus episode of Locklisted, the podcast available exclusively to supporters of the show’s Patreon, which will give the audience the chance to ask the panel questions about Endless Night, Agatha Christie or the Backlisted podcast!

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight LIVE at Foyles

The much-loved Backlisted podcast returns to Foyles Charing Cross Road for the second instalment in a very special live series of the show. John and Andy are joined this June by guest speakers Dr Laura Varnam and Dr Martin Shaw for a journey through the Middle English classic Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

Dr Laura Varnam
is the Lecturer in Old and Middle English at University College, Oxford. Laura's first book, The Church as Sacred Space in Middle English Literature and Culture, was published in 2018. She is the co-founder of the Margery Kempe Society which supports and promotes the study and teaching of The Book of Margery Kempe. Laura is also an expert on the life and works of Daphne du Maurier, the subject of her forthcoming book.

Dr Martin Shaw is a writer, storyteller and mythologist. Award-winning author of seventeen books, his most recent, Bardskull, was a Guardian Book of the Day. He is a wilderness rites of passage guide and spent four years living in a tent. Shaw founded the Oral Tradition and Living Myth courses at Stanford University. He is widely published: Orion, The Sun, Mississippi Review, Poetry International and many others.

The Good Soldier LIVE at Foyles

Foyles Charing Cross Road is delighted to be the venue for a series of live recordings of the much-loved Backlisted podcast, kicking off this May with a discussion of Ford Madox Ford’s The Good Soldier with guest speaker Alex Michaelides.

Alex Michaelides is the author of The Silent Patient, which was the biggest selling debut in the world in 2019. It spent over a year on the New York Times bestseller list and sold in a record-breaking 50 countries. His latest novel is The Fury, published in February 2024.
